other vs different

Posted by Tanialoves · May 15, 2009 · 2 replies

Hello,

Which one is correct in this context?

Last year I was responsible for organizing meetings with clients.

  • This year my responsibilities are different OR other.
  • I have different OR other responsibilities this year.

I think that "different" should be used in the first sentence. And also it seems that both are possible in the second one.

Could you please help me?
Thank you

Your assumptions seem right to me.
- This year my responsibilities are different.
- I have different/other responsibilities this year. (both are OK)

The first example:
*This year my responsibilities are other.
is semmantically wrong and interesting. It seems 'other' as an adjective requires a noun to follow. I'll have to run a few examples around for a bit to give you a better answer, but the actual example of when that sentence would be acceptable is hard to explain.

Thank you, mesmark. I do appreciate you help. 🙂
