Could I use travel?

-A majority of people consider this a journey that people should __ alone.

For journey, I know go on/have/make/begin/set out on/resume/complete; though 'travel' sounds all right, my non-native friend says it sounds wrong to him. Who do you think is correct?

"to travel a journey" does not collocate. The verbs you could use include "make a journey" or "go on a journey", or any of the others you suggest - but not travel. "to travel" means to go on a journey, so it wouldn't make sense to use them together. So either :

The majority of people suggest that this is a journey which you should go on alone.
or
The majority of people suggest that you should travel alone.

Excellent answer. Thank you.
