Default Newcomer's Night - A bit of a party for adults

Okay, I have 100 new students attending a "Newcomer's Night" at work and guess who the lucky fella is. Yep you guessed it, me.

So, my obvious question is what do I do. My ideas are as follows:

1. Student attends and relaxes.
2. Introduction to the school.
3. "Find someone who" activity.
4. ????
5. ????
6. Music, drink and eating time.
7. Pub and goodbyes.

What do I do during the "????" parts? The night is about 2 hours long so the "Find someone who" activity should last 20~30 minutes. What can I do to make the night span 1 hour then get the students to mingle together at the end of the night?

Any ideas would be great.

How about giving each student a card when they arrive. On each card is half of a famous pair and during the evening they have to find their 'partner'. eg Oliver and Hardy, Anthony and Cleopatra, Tom and Jerry, Mork and Mindy, Will and Grace, Napoleon and Josephine, Sid and Nancy, Lennon and Macartney etc.

In any case, have fun!

Thanks for the advise Clive. I shall consider that. I had some more ideas about having some crosswords that are half completed for pairs of students. The students then have to explain the word for the their partner but they cannot show their crossword to each other. Just an idea and should eat up loads of time. Found a website that can help you create crosswords (probably good for kids):

Btw, how's your kid nowadays? My son is 3 and a half now. He's going to kindergarten everyday and he enjoys it. He has started to mix English with Korean. Sorry, it should be a separate topic.

Hi there,

She's fine, thanks for asking. Talking quite a bit - mainly in Italian but her comprehension of both languages are about the same. We flick through her books and ask her where the dog \ cat \ car \ cloud is etc etc and she picks them out easily enough. It's interesting to see how her skills are developing.

What about your son? Is he fluent in both or does he prefer Korean?

btw - how did the party go?

He understands both Korean and English, so has good comprehension skills. He has good vocabulary in both languages but he separates between English and Korean between people. He calls Korean family with Korean names and English family with English names. A bit funny in a way.
