You do not mention what age group you are working with. How about choosing a sentence such as
-My favourite memory
- My best friend
-I love to_______
Brainstorm these choices with your class, writing key words for them to reference. Ask pointed questions such as

what describing words could you use,
how do you feel, happy, sad, excited etc.
discuss senses, smell, touch, colours etc.

Then you could give them the starting sentence and encourage them to write.

I get my students (9-11 year olds) to write a short story (5-10 sentences). Then, I get them to mime it in front of the class as they read it. I demonstrate with my own story.

One of my favorite writing activities is to have the children complete an add-a-sentence story. You can do this in a variety of ways: One way would be to have all the students write the same sentence on the top of a sheet of paper. Another way would be for you to write a different sentence on the top of each sheet of paper and hand them out to the students. A third way would be to have the students write their own starting sentence. All you need to do is have the students write one sentence and pass their paper to the next person. Then, when a student gets a paper, he or she reads the story and adds a sentence. Once everyone has their own paper back they can read the stories aloud to the class. This is a great activity because it involves reading, writing, speaking.

I like the one that pix uses. I play this one, too. Another variation is to get the students to cover up the second last sentence as they pass the piece of paper along. This way they are only reading and basing their sentence on what the previous student wrote, not what every student wrote.

What about creating a special witches brew recipe for halloween. Vocabulary such as toads, newts, bats wings etc could be explored.
