Default 1000 Most Commonly Used English Words

This was sent to me from me-cook-salami. It's a word document of the 1000 most commonly used English words. Could be useful for general vocabulary games, for making posters of words to put up around your class or for testing your students every few months.

Thanks me-cook-salami!

Did me-cook-salami mention the source of the list? I'd like to know who compiled it and whether they are the most common spoken words, written or both...

Just curious!

Also, I would like to know if they are in order of usage? At first glance they appear to be.

Smile Re: 1000 Most Commonly Used English Words

I found a link to the 1000 most common words in written English broken down into groups of 100.

The list is from WEB Dubois Learning Center website via their Education Watch Program (www.duboislc.org), and the list is HERE.

Or, you can try this really cool thing: you can type in a word you think of and find its frequency rank at www.wordcount.org which has used over 86,000 words from the British National Corpus (which has 100 million words). This is a really fun tool.

Happy searching.

Karen
