Default Teach in the Himalayas at the charitable Kaghan Memorial School, Pakistan

The Kaghan Memorial Trust (KMT) is a non-profit charitable organisation established following the earthquake of 2005 that devastated northern Pakistan. KMT is looking for qualified female teachers from around the world who will commit for a minimum of one year and preferably two years to teach at the charitable Kaghan Memorial School. As teachers, they will come and live in the beautiful Kaghan Valley in North Pakistan in one of the areas worst hit by the earthquake.

The Kaghan Memorial School has been established by KMT to provide quality education, free of charge, to children, boys and girls, from this earthquake devastated region. Even prior to the earthquake, the people of Kaghan were amongst the poorest in Pakistan; the earthquake made their lives exponentially worse. KMT is supporting the reconstruction and development process in this area by building and operating this school that will provide at least some children from this valley an opportunity to receive a good education that can enable them to change their lives and the lives of their families for the better. KMT plans in the future to also provide scholarships for children who graduate from the school, to allow them to pursue higher education and to complete their studies.

Classes for the foundation semester of The Kaghan Memorial School opened on September 15, 2008, with 60 Kindergarten and Grade 1 students. These children will be joined by a further 60 (2 classes) in March 2009 when the first full school year will begin. Following this, the school will expand by 60 new children each successive year. This process will continue until the school has reached the capacity of 840 students in 12 years time. Ultimately, the school will comprise of a modern coeducational primary school, a senior school for girls and a separate senior school for boys with fully-equipped classrooms, multi-media facilities, computer laboratories, art rooms, science laboratories, medical rooms and the only libraries in the whole of the Kaghan Valley.

In order to achieve the highest standards of teaching, The Kaghan Memorial School recruits experienced teachers from all over the world. The school currently has two volunteer teachers. Further volunteers are currently being recruited for the new school year beginning in March 2009 as teachers of either Kindergarten or Grade 1. They will be required to arrive in Pakistan by mid or end February with a commitment to teach until the end of December 2009. Applicants will need to have a college degree and experience teaching children and/or teaching English as a second language. Urdu is not a necessity as teachers at the school work with a team of local teaching assistants. The Trust will provide its volunteers with accommodation, meals, one return air ticket to their home country per year, health insurance, local transport facilities and a monthly stipend of Pak. Rs. 10,000 (approx US $130) to cover incidental expenses.

Interested candidates may apply by writing to Khurram Khan, the Managing Trustee, at teachers@kmt.org.pk. All applications should be accompanied by detailed resumes and scanned passport-type photos. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further information including references, and a telephone interview and a face-to-face interview may also be scheduled at a later stage. Further details about the school and the Trust can be found at our website: The Kaghan Memorial Trust ::"Better communities through better education"
