 Re: what are your goals with readings
I use reading exercises for concept checking purposes. It also helps to challenge sts to use language in new ways. I sometimes have the sts read a short story (maybe 20-30 lines/ sentences). I will then cut up the story (line by line) and get the students to put the story back together. I do this in small teams.
