Punjabi 1st grader I have a 1st grader who speaks Punjabi. Are there any activities or online resources I can use to teach him English? |
Re: Punjabi 1st grader you can use all the resources on this site to teach him. esl/efl resources are not specific to language. most teachers don't use language one when teaching English. so dig in! :) eric |
Re: Punjabi 1st grader There are loads of sites that can be used with the student. I would recommend any of the childrens TV program sites www.nickjr.com www.noggin.com www.sesamestreet.com ... If the child likes any specific show, they each have their own sites and they have a lot of different activities within that theme. I have a few vocabulary builders you can do with the student here www.marks-english-school.com/games.html and they use pictures and have sound. There are lalso inks to other sites with similar activities, online readers and so on. I hope that helps. |
Re: Punjabi 1st grader I am replying to this post as I do specialise in exactly that area - fun english games for children aged 4-12. Many teachers rely on photocopiable resources, but I believe that many teachers rely too much on worksheets that takes the students two minutes to fill in. Have you given any thought to incorporating games into your lessons? While you might think that it may be hard playing a game with just one student there are a number of things that you can do, such give a limited time for the task using a stopwatch or timer. The student must complete the task before the timer goes off so you add excitement by having a race against the clock. You can also time your student and then see if they can beat their time in the next round. You can also play too and again there are things you can do to make it a genuine game, rather than one where you either win all the time or pretend to be slow. For example you can give your pupil a head start or make your task harder. You can find out more about teaching children with games through the site below. I wish you all the best with your one to one teaching. It's highly rewarding and a valuable skill because you can use the same games and techniques to teach your own children or family members a second language. Here's a page on How to teach a child to speak English for face to face lessons. And this book is for you if you are teaching online: ESL Online Games - it does one to one, groups and virtual classes. |
Re: Punjabi 1st grader YOu could try some songs with actions that help to introduce and reinforce vocabulary. Simple action songs are fun for the child. YOu could play the songs in the background as you are doing your teaching activities so the student becomes familiar with the songs, melodies etc. Then when you introduce the song as a part of the lesson it will not be so new to them. Action songs are great as they involve movement. THey will want to play it again and again. THis means they can begin to chant or sing along as they become confident and then eventually, they will be practising the pronunciation over and over. Chants and singing also familiarize the student with the rhythm of the English language. http://www.pamseslclassroom has lots of songs and ideas for younger students. |
