Private tutoring - how do you start out? Hi everyone, I'd like to boost my somewhat modest (understatement) income by giving private tuition. I've done this before in the UK, and I got the work through a friend of a friend. Really enjoyed it and would like to get into it again. Here in la belle France, however, I don't know many people yet. How would / have you gone about getting work giving private lessons? :confused2 Thanks in advance for your help :becky: Quoi de 9 ;) |
Re: Private tutoring - how do you start out? Go to a local college and pin a notice on their bulletin board |

Re: Private tutoring - how do you start out? - Find an English forum for France |
Re: Private tutoring - how do you start out? Definitely check at the local uni for a bulletin board. And here's a link from Dave's ESL Cafe for the France job forums; it will be a good place to start networking, as well as getting advice from people in the same situation as you. http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewforum.php?f=16 Depending on how serious you are, you might also consider making up some business cards. Hand them out to people you meet at bars, restaurants, schools, friends of friends... basically everyone, everywhere. You should get some phone calls eventually. Networking is really important here in Japan, so my experience is limited to here. But I can't imagine the market being so totally different that once you know a few people, who then know a few other people, who also know people, that a steady trickle of students won't make their way to you. Re: Private tutoring - how do you start out? Also it's a good idea to make some flyers that you can put up in some shops or local boards like in the university as some people suggested, so that many people can see them. I've seen a lot of them on traffic poles but I think that's probably illegal in most western countries :) It depends on who you want to teach. You can put some flyers in the local schools if you want to teach kids or the local business center if you want to teach adults. Basically put flyers everywhere! Also check the net. I'm sure there is some French website in English looking for English teachers. I got a private through the Korean site and in the interests of safety you can just give out your email address (or make another one in my case) in case your boss or the police find out  |
