Pre Uni Reading Class Resources I just got hired to teach an ESL reading course at a university. The students are taking this course to prepare them for academic English in the next year. I've never taught reading in this context before (uni students, 2 hour classes). I'm wondering if there are any specific books/resources for teaching reading to ELLs in a uni or pre uni setting. As a further concnern, some of them are actually well above the level and just bombed their placement exam to extend their visas, so any ideas on leveled reading to adults would be great. Thanks. |
Re: Pre Uni Reading Class Resources Are you in America? What placement test was used? Was it a CASAS test, and if so, which one? That will give me some idea how high they are. Can they read and understand a typical American newspaper (not a high one like the New York Times)? |
Re: Pre Uni Reading Class Resources I'm not sure what their level is or what the test was, I was just told today I was hired. A lot of them are higher than the placement because they intentionally did bad on the test to keep their visas (this in the US). I think they are right around local newspaper level, at least that's what I'm going to teach them. |
Re: Pre Uni Reading Class Resources That sounds like a good place to start. Keep alert in case they start to act bored. Many newspapers have online websites and you can take your class to the computer lab and give them online activities. |
Re: Pre Uni Reading Class Resources OK, thanks. Any general reading exercises that you would recommend? |
