Unhappy New to ESL, need tips

I just started volunteering at a local literacy center. I'm unsure of where to begin! All the adults in my class are at varying levels. Should I begin with the alphabet to practice pronunciation and writing? Should I concentrate more on dialogue? What about homework?:

Hi Sylvia,

Are you teaching native speakers who can't read or write? If so, you may be in the wrong forum, because teaching adult literacy is very different from teaching ESL.

But if you're teaching non-native speakers at a very basic level, we can give you some advice here.
