Hi!
Next week I'm planning to introduce the clause "there is/there are" to BASIC 2 adult students. Could you give me some tips to introduce it?
I'm also having problems with MUCH, MANY, ANY....

Any piece of advice will be highly appreciated.

I've taught there is/are with objects in the classroom. Try the following:

Step One: Brainstorm singular nouns, such as clock, desk, table, book, notebook, etc. Write these on the board.

Step Two: Plug the nouns into the following sentence: "There is a (object)." Do choral drills with the students, and then have them work in pairs. Student A says an object and student B has to make a sentence. Switch roles and repeat several times. This will get the grammar pattern set in their heads.

Step Three: Elicit plurals of the objects, then introduce: "There are (object + s)."

Step Four: Practice the sentences as in Step Two. When students work in pairs, student A says: "is / clock" and student B answers: "There is a clock." Continue through the vocab and switch roles.

Step Five: Introduce prepositions with there is/are. Students can practice in /on / beside / behind, plus a few others. To practice, students can find objects in the room and describe their location.

Hi.

Why don't you use pronoun cards? Put all the cards together and tell the students to make sentences using pronouns "there" and "this" etc. and phrases such as "there is" should naturally occur, or at least only with 3 - 10 examples of repeating such phrases, when you introduce the words. Thanks.
