Default Trash talk

Hello

I would like to know if you can help me find out the meaning of the term 'Trash talk'. It appears on this text about video games: Dad's Still Got Game, but the Kid's Got Talent - washingtonpost.com

It's the part it says "I hope you take it okay," says Cole-Hines, indulging in a bit of trash talk.

I appreciate your help.

I can't get into the article, but in a competition it's bragging about how good you are, or putting down the other players in order to intimidate them or get a psychological edge.

Normally, I use "Trash Talk" to mean 'abusive' talk during a game, that's not meant to be taken seriously. If I'm playing a game, I'll make fun of an opponents mistakes, but in a friendly way. . . it's just 'trash talk.'

It is a relatively new term. I'd say in the last 10 or 15 years is when people started using that term. It used to have to do with basketball, but now it is used everywhere.
