I totally agree. I think it's more of a self study book, too many listening activities. If the students want some listening activities then they can listen to me talk but mostly they want to learn how to speak properly. I like Interchange but I never do the listening activities. Again students can do that themselves. Other than that I use "Talk your head off" and Small Discussion Activities Books.

Side by Side is purely grammar teaching. It depends on what your students need but it can become very boring at times and is usually used for lower level students.

For kids you might want to try Hip Hip Hurray. I have used levels 1~6 and it's good. I like them. Also I use a lot of materials from here
