Default Re: How do you teach "like"?

Like is a tricky one. I don't teach it all in one lesson - it's far too complicated.

First I teach like for preferences eg I like fish \ I don't like cooking etc. At this point I emphasise the use of the -ing form after like\love\hate\don't ming etc. There are exceptions but leave it at this point. Keep it simple.

Then, some weeks or even months later, I introduce like as a preposition. eg What is the weather like today? I explain that like is asking for a description. It's sunny \ hot \ cloudy \ cold etc.
Then you can extend this idea to describe people with the two questions: What does she look like? (She's tall \ blonde \ slim \ dark \ short etc) What is she like? (She's friendly \ rude \ arrogant \ kind etc)
I teach that the first is asking for a physical description and the second a description of her personality\character.

The most important thing is to do each part slowly and give plenty of practice. Don't do it all at once or you'll just confuse them.
Hope that helps.
