Re: teaching grammar creatively Other people will provide many excellent suggestions for classroom assignments.
Please allow me to share an odd idea for a grammar homework assignment.
This might seem quite odd, but I recently had considerable success asking students to find both pronunciation lessons and job interview tips - good and bad - on YouTube. I just asked every student to find and write a short paragraph summary of a video and email me before Sunday night. On Monday morning, I combined the student recommendations - corrected some simple grammatical errors - and email the class the list (with one additional video review by me). The students, on their own, watched several of the videos - and learned more on their own than most homework assignments. You can repeat the assignment by asking students to find YouTube videos on particular grammar points.
If that sounds too wacky, you can also send them to Purdue University's outstanding Online Writing Lab for a concise overview of grammar rules. They have some solid, if traditional, exercises.
Good luck. |
